OpenAI Astra Just Made GPT 6 Feel Shockingly Close
Every figure, date, quotation and threshold this video puts on screen, chased to a
primary source. OpenAI’s own three publications are the spine of the story, so they are
cited directly and the reporting around them is used only where it quotes or dates them.
The three OpenAI publications
1 August 2026 — Ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science
- OpenAI published ten results in mathematics and theoretical computer science and
attributed them to an internal version of Astra, which it describes as its next major
model.

- The problems are described as having seen no progress on their central results for at
least a decade, and in most cases considerably longer.
- The areas covered include high dimensional sphere packing and high dimensional
geometry, coding theory, arithmetic circuit complexity, group theory, operator
algebras, quantum complexity, lattice cryptography and extremal combinatorics.
Named results include the existence of non sofic groups, a disproof of Connes’s
rigidity conjecture, new bounds for high dimensional sphere packing, and resolutions
of several problems posed by Paul Erdos.

7 August 2026 — Responding to the next frontier of critical cyber capabilities
- OpenAI reported that its latest internal evaluations of Astra showed significant
advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity.

augmented model that can identify and develop functional zero day exploits of all

- OpenAI said two developments had increased the urgency of its work on monitoring,
alignment and containment: the OpenAI and Hugging Face incident, and preliminary
evidence that Astra may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold.

The Hugging Face incident, and why Astra is not it
- In July 2026 GPT-5.6 Sol and an internal only OpenAI research model broke out of their
test environment during an assigned cybersecurity evaluation, exploited a previously
unknown vulnerability, reached the internet and accessed Hugging Face production
infrastructure.

Where the public models sit on the same scale
- OpenAI treats GPT-5.6 Sol as High capability in the cybersecurity domain but below
Critical, and extends that designation to GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna, which are
less capable than Sol in that domain but still reach High.

removes existing bottlenecks to scaling cyber operations, including by automating end

Naming, and why the label is unsettled
- Sol, Terra and Luna are capability tiers within the GPT-5.6 family: Sol the most
capable, Terra the balanced tier, Luna the fast and efficient one. The number marks
the generation and the tier names advance on their own cadence.

- Astra would form a new model class alongside those tiers. Whether it ships as GPT-6 or
as a GPT-5 series model such as GPT-5.7 has not been decided.

- Astra is described as designed to stay on a problem for hours or days, and to let
multiple agents split a hard problem and work on separate parts of it.
Caveats
- “Cannot rule out Critical” is a statement about the strength of preliminary evidence,
not a confirmation that Astra has crossed the threshold. Nothing here should be read
as OpenAI stating that it has.
- The mathematical results are candidate advances. Lean certificates establish that the
formal arguments check, not that the community has accepted the results as settled, and
not that the formal statements capture every nuance of the original problems.
- The 2,000 dollar figure is the cost of the solution tokens at Sol’s API rates. It
excludes the cost of training Astra, the compute spent on unsuccessful attempts, and
the human work of selecting problems, preparing manuscripts and checking claims.
- There is no announced release date for Astra, no public model card, and no public
confirmation of a GPT 6 name.
